Balsam Fir
The Balsam Fir is found in northeastern North America from Virginia to Newfoundland and northwest towards Yukon and Labrador. The Balsam Fir varies from a small to medium sized native evergreen tree. The trees size varies to be from 40 feet tall to 80 feet tall. The Balsam Fir has a wide base and a narrow top, that ends very narrow.
Black Spruce
The Black Spruce considered to be a tall tree. It can grow to be up to 25 meters tall. As the tree grows older the top of the tree becomes more like a spike. The Black Spruce has sharp 4 sided needles on them. The needles are a blue-green color, short, and pointy. The needles on the tree are usually about half an inch long. The Black Spruce has pine cones on it. It prefers a colder climate to live in. Many animals do not feed on the Black Spruce such as deer, moose and elk.
Douglas-fir
Douglas-firs are considered to be very big trees. They can grow to be from 40 and 60 feet tall and 15 to 25 feet wide. Because they are very big trees, they are considered to be one of the most important lumber trees in the world. The wood from the Douglas-fir is used for lumber, plywood, and timbers. The dense wood is very stiff and durable. In the winter or early spring animals forage off the Douglas-fir when their other food supplies are covered in snow or haven't come up yet.
eastern red cedar
The Eastern Red Cedar is a small evergreen tree that commonly grows from 10-50 feet tall. The Eastern Red Cedars name is misleading because it is a juniper tree not a cedar tree. It grows from Nova Scotia to Northern Florida and west to The Dakotas and Texas. The Eastern Red Cedar can grow in any type of soil. It prefers if it has full sun and the seedlings will not grow well in forested areas. The crown of the tree will become more curved as the tree grows older.
jack pine
The Jack Pine usually grows to be around 27 meters tall and between 16 and 32 centimeters in diameter. As the tree grows older the crown becomes more round. The bark of the Jack Pine is reddish-brown. As the tree ages the trunk turns from reddish-brown to a more gray color. The Jack Pine has needles instead of leaves. It also has pine cones that produce and store its seeds. The Jack Pine gives most animals their nutrients. Most of the nutrients are given to rodents.
paper birch
Paper Birch trees have a very thin bark that peels into horizontal layers which separate into sheets, similar to paper. Birch trees can grow in clusters of trees or pairs of trees. The Paper Birch tree can grow from 60 to 80 feet high. The Paper Birch tree was used by Indians to make birch bark canoes. They still make ornaments and small baskets out of Paper Birch trees today.
Siberian spruce
The Siberian Spruce tree is a tall perennial needle-leaf tree. It is a very tall tree that can grow up to 30 meters high. The diameter of the Siberian Spruce is about 1.5 meters wide. Its branches are slightly stooping which makes it look like a pyramid. Moose eat twigs of the trees, and birds also eat seeds from the trees.
white fir
The White Fir can grow to be 60-100 feet high making it a very large forest tree. It can also live up to 300 years old. The White Fir can be found in most of the western regions in North America. It is also the only native fir of the North American taiga. The most used part of the White Fir is the wood, which is used as lumber. It is also commonly used as a Christmas tree.
white poplar
White Poplar trees may grow to be 70 feet or more in height. The diameter of poplar trees are usually somewhere around 2 feet. Poplar trees usually do not live very long. Poplar wood is a whitish/brownish color. The wood is soft, light and fairly weak. Poplar trees are often planted as shade trees because they grow so fast. It is also illegal to plant Poplar trees along streets in some cities because they clog underground drainpipes and sewers.
White spruce
The White Spruce usually grows to be between 15-30 meters tall. However it may grow to be 40 meters tall also. The trunk diameter is approximately 1 meter. The bark is thin and scaly, usually coming off in circular plates 5-10 centimeters across. The spruce tree is an evergreen color. It is shaped like a pyramid.
